Wisdom Teeth Removal

For some people, wisdom teeth do not have to be extracted.  If they align properly and the gum tissue is healthy, they can remain in your jaw without causing pain and discomfort.  However, this is not always the case. Wisdom teeth become problematic when they are misaligned. They can grow in sideways, angled toward or away from the second molars, or angled inward or outward.  Poor alignment can crowd and damage adjacent teeth, the jawbone, or surrounding nerves.

“Impacted” wisdom teeth are those that remain trapped beneath the gum and bone.  Poorly positioned impacted teeth can cause pressure that may move and disrupt the orthodontic or natural alignment of teeth.

Orthognathic Surgery

Staten Island Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery offers the most advanced treatment options to correct major and minor skeletal and dental deformities in the jaw. Jaws that are imbalanced or in the wrong position can lead to a number of problems that can affect chewing, swallowing, breathing, and overall facial appearance. Problems with jaw alignment can be caused by injury, birth defect, or different growth rates between the upper and lower jaws.

Proper detection and treatment of jaw deformities can help manage chronic jaw pain, biting and chewing difficulties, or any other jaw related problems. Ultimately, techniques that bring the jaw and teeth into better balance can improve the functionality and health of your jaw.

Cleft Lip & Palate

During the early weeks of development, long before a child is born, the separate areas of the face develop individually and then join together later.  This includes the left and right sides of the roof of the mouth and lips.  Occasionally, however, these parts do not join properly and a separation occurs in the upper lip. This condition is called a “cleft lip.”

With a cleft lip, an opening is created in the upper lip between the mouth and nose, looking as though there is a split in the lip.  This can be detrimental on both a physical and functional level. A completely formed lip is important for a normal facial appearance but also for sucking and forming certain sounds made during speech.

Patient Reviews

From the first time meeting with Dr. Lam and staff I loved them. I never felt comfortable with dentists, but with Dr. Lam I felt completely at ease. I have 3 implants now and one tooth had to be pulled the grafted and an implant put in which was done all at once. I had no pain some swelling but all in all a great experience. Dr. Lam is AMAZING!! I highly recommend this office.

Dr. Hoffman did my implants over 30 years ago and they are still strong as ever. That is why when I needed another implant I traveled from NJ to SI for his best of class skills. His staff and his knowledge of implants and surgery truly represent excellent best practices to model. He is truly a leader in his field. Thank you all!

Dr. Goodenough took very good care of me. I had to get my tooth pulled. He explained what would happen before, during, and after the procedure. I was interested in an implant. He did the grafting directly. Normally, I have anxiety when I enter any an Oral Surgeon’s Office. Doctor’s knowledge and great bedside manners, reassured me that I’m in good hands.

I found this group and had Dr. Emad Abdou as my oral surgeon. Love this man, love this office. Everyone is very patient, sweet and helpful. Dr. Emad himself is a doll and an excellent surgeon. If you’re looking for a good supportive place to have work done. Look no further. The best!!! 10 stars if I could rate that high. Hope this is helpful in your time of need!

Frequently Asked Questions

The recovery process following oral and maxillofacial surgery varies depending on the specific procedure performed. Generally, it involves a period of rest, pain management, and following post-operative instructions provided by our expert team. Swelling and discomfort are common initially but can be managed with prescribed medications and cold compresses. Dental implants offer numerous advantages as a permanent solution for missing teeth. They provide a natural appearance, stability, and improved chewing function, enhancing both your smile and overall oral health. Additionally, dental implants help preserve jawbone structure and prevent the shifting of adjacent teeth. However, it’s important to note that the dental implant process involves surgery and a period of healing. Some potential cons include the need for adequate bone density for implant placement and the rare possibility of complications. Our experienced team will assess your individual case, discuss the pros and cons, and guide you in making an informed decision regarding dental implants.

It’s important to rest, avoid strenuous activities, and follow a soft-food diet during the initial stages of recovery. Additionally, practicing good oral hygiene and attending follow-up appointments as scheduled will ensure proper healing. Our compassionate team will closely monitor your progress and address any concerns to ensure your comfort throughout the recovery process.
